Want Change? Try This!
Oct 20, 2022
There's an ancient text (okay, the Bible) that declares, empowered from a spiritual place, it's possible for "old things to pass away and all things to be made new".
In our lives we tap into this capacity to create change when we set goals to change something, or set New Years resolutions to capitalize on the momentum of a brand new year.
The deeper you make a commitment, that is, the further into your thinking and emotions this decision to change something goes, the more likely you'll see the fruition of it. This is why tackling things from a spiritual place is so potent.
We're all aware of this to a degree, but consider changes you'd like to see in your relationship. How do you create change in a marriage?
What about starting the practice of having conversation specifically to come up with something you'd like to see changed each year about the two of you? Dream together a little bit. Share your hearts.
Remember, the deeper you make a commitment increases it's chance of follow-thru and success. And in a marriage relationship this depth is determined by:
- Do I really want this? Or are you just going along to get along; or is it something you "want", just not that much...
- Are we talking deeply about it? Conversational depth is past small-talk, past opinions, past initial emotions that surface, into areas of identity and who you are together; who you're becoming as a couple.
And there's another component that'll drive the change far deeper than even the deepest conversation between the two of you. It's this:
Pray together.
This, whether you're brand new to it (it's simply opening your heart and talking to God!) or a seasoned prayer person, will invite God's ability into your ability as a couple, and many-fold increase the chances of success.
When you pray together, you're joining yourselves in a core part of who you are. When practiced well it's hard to go deeper than that.
Open your browser or a paper-copy Bible and pray this together: God, we ask you together as we read and pray this, that you will do this for us in the area of _________ (chosen area of change)
